AWS Nonprofit Credit Program review - up to $5,000 in cloud credits via TechSoup

What it is

Amazon Web Services is the largest cloud platform: servers, storage, databases, and hundreds of other services. Through the AWS Nonprofit Credit Program, eligible organizations can get up to $5,000 a year in AWS promotional credits, granted through TechSoup.

The honest math

Be precise about the “up to”: the grant is tiered at $1,000, $2,000, or $5,000 depending on eligibility, so $5,000 is the ceiling, not a flat amount everyone receives. You request it through TechSoup, which charges a small administrative fee, and you can renew one grant per fiscal year (July 1 to June 30) if you still qualify. Credits are valid for at least a year and expire if unused, so do not claim them before you have a real workload to spend them on.

The catch

AWS is powerful and correspondingly complex, and its usage-based billing is unforgiving: once the credit runs out or expires, costs continue, and a misconfigured service can quietly run up a bill. This program rewards organizations that already have technical capacity and a genuine reason to be on AWS. Note too that educational institutions are excluded.

Who should skip it

Nonprofits without in-house technical staff, and anyone whose needs are met by ordinary SaaS. For most small organizations, DigitalOcean’s simpler pricing or a managed host is a safer place to spend a credit than raw AWS. The amber rating is about fit and risk, not the generosity of the grant.

The honest take

Real value for the AWS-competent minority, a trap for everyone else. If you already run on AWS, take the credit and watch the post-credit billing; if you do not, this is not your entry point to the cloud.
