DigitalOcean for Nonprofits review - $2,500 in cloud credits, if you self-host

What it is

DigitalOcean is a developer-focused cloud provider: virtual servers, managed databases, and app hosting, generally simpler and cheaper than the hyperscalers. For nonprofits and social enterprises it offers a one-time $2,500 infrastructure credit plus 20% off Cloudways, its managed-hosting arm.

The honest math

The credit is one-time and valid for one year, not a recurring grant. That is real money if you actually run infrastructure - a custom application, a data platform, a self-hosted tool - but it is worth nothing if your nonprofit runs entirely on SaaS. Plan for the cliff, too: once the $2,500 is spent or the year is up, you pay standard usage-based pricing, so size what you deploy to what you can sustain afterward.

How eligibility works

Eligibility is validated through Goodstack (DigitalOcean’s own announcement still names it “Percent,” the company’s former name). The Cloudways discount is a straightforward 20% off managed hosting for teams that would rather not manage servers directly.

Who should skip it

Most small nonprofits, honestly. If you do not have someone comfortable spinning up and maintaining a server, this credit will expire unused, and a managed SaaS tool will serve you better. It earns an amber rating on fit, not quality: the offer is good, but the audience for it is narrow.

The honest take
